Video On Dreams
The short video was all about dreams and how people define and interpret dreams. The video states that humans experience only about 2 hours of dreaming during one night’s sleep. During this time, all muscles in the body are shut down except for toes, fingers, and eyes. Scientists call this period of sleep REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. It is where the mind is most active and that is when dreaming occurs. Dreams come from neurons firing within the mind and then the mind tries to make a story or associate the chemicals with some real-life object or event. Some scientists believe that dreams have no meaning to the real world. It is just the nature of the brain to want to create meaning out of random things. One the other hand, some psychologists believe that dreams are the pathways to the unconscious mind. Deep emotions that have been suppressed over the years may be expressed within dreams. Dream psychologists try to capture a person’s dream so that all the stored up emotion may come out of a person and perhaps heal whatever mental anguish a person may be feeling.
I feel comforted when a dream psychologist says that a dream means something and that it is connected to the real world. Then all my dreams and sleep fell like they are not wasted things. Also, dreams could give me insight as to what sort of things bother me so that I can cure myself of bad vibes. At the same time, there is a part of me that says that dreams are meaningless and random. This way of viewing the mind seems more realistic and easier to cope with. If dreams are meaningless and the mind simply makes things up, then when a nightmare occurs, I have nothing to worry about. I do not have to think much about why my mind brings up weird topics in dreams. I feel secure when I can tell myself that things are exactly as they seem.
